At an early point in the first meetings about holding a Construction Week someone mentioned finding a deserving charity project.
The idea was to find projects which could be completed within the week, loosely following the style of the BBC show DIY SOS, using our expertise to give the chosen charity a refurbishment which they could not otherwise have afforded.
One of the charities which answered our call for just such a project was the Good Companions Club, formerly Eastern Good Companions, in St Clement.
The work they needed doing was not glamorous but it was much-needed and, from the outset, it was clear that it would make a huge difference to the members of the club. The job was to refurbish their toilets and upgrade the exterior.
The Managing Director of Camerons Ltd Marc Burton led the project at the Good Companions Club. “It was a really nice project to work on. This was a charity which would have had to do a lot of fund-raising to get this job done otherwise. They were really grateful for the work that we were doing and would have been glad for any of it to be done”, said Marc.
The bathrooms are now equipped with new floors, tiling, mirrors and new storage cupboards and have been freshened up with a complete redecoration. When the team turned their attention to the outside of the building they put up new guttering, repaired the render.
Elaine Griffin, the manager of the Good Companions Club, said: “The members are really, really pleased with the work that has been done. We didn’t think that they would be able to get it all done in the time.”
She said that on Friday there was “television make-over rush” to finish the project. “They did finish in time and we are delighted with what they have done”, she said. “in the end we finished with two minutes to spare”, said Marc.
Elaine said that without the contact from the Jersey Construction Council, the work would have had to wait until the Club was able to fund the project. “We are a charity and would have waited a long time for this work. It is fantastic and has made such a difference to us”, she said.
The JeCC member companies which took on the challenge to complete the project within a week were Camerons, AST Decorators, SPF Flooring, John McGarragle, Pallot Glass, Romerils and Profile Guttering.
