Jersey Bobsleighers Will Golder and Kevan Crowell finished both races at the first round of the Europa Cup in the top 30.
Competing for Great Britain they improved on their first race finish of 30th out of 35 finishers with 29th in the second race – a result which guarantees them a spot in January’s Junior World Championship in St Moritz.
The Jersey Bobsleigh Club members only had one day of training on the run after bad weather in Jersey delayed their departure.
Golder said: “Just one day training, a new bob, and a new season meant this was very much in at the deep end. But race one went quite well, we started quickly and my drive down was very smooth. It was raining hard so the track was getting slower and slower as the race went on, so being drawn 28th did not help, and we lost a little time in turn seven with a higher line which meant we dropped to 30th”.
In race two, with conditions colder and the ice faster, the team started 0.02 faster than the previous day and finished 0.30 seconds faster than their first race.
Golder said: “My drive was not quite as good as we took a tap on the exit of seven and were slightly low through eight but although I made those two mistakes we came down faster because other parts of the track were very nice.”
With the team’s push start ranked 22nd after the first race brakeman Crowell said: “All things considered our push was very credible although we have a number of things to work on, most notably our timing. But with a smooth run down and our first points of the season we can only be pleased.
We had a quicker start in race two and our downtime put us ahead of all but one of the other British crews so it has been a good two days overall.”
One of our four GB development teams competing at the event Golder and Crowell, who are sponsored by Camerons, finished third GB team in the first race and second in the final event.
Golder said after the second run: “For the first time we beat GB Team Hillman who have been on the circuit for seven years and are in full time training which is a major step in the right direction as it shows we are continuing to improve.”
The next event is being held in Koenigssee, Germany, next week.
