The Good Companions Club received a free makeover as part of Construction Week.
In the style of BBC television series DIY SOS, members of the Jersey Construction Council arrived at the Good Companions Club last Monday and left on Friday, having refurbished the cloakrooms and the outside of the building.
Camerons Managing Director Marc Burton, who was in charge of the project, said: “We have been refurbishing two cloakrooms and the exterior of the main entrance. We put in new gutters, new flooring, tiling and new cupboards. We have made improvements and created extra storage.”
Asked how the club, which organises activities and events for the elderly, appreciated the work, he said: “They were really grateful because they are a registered charity and they would have had to raise the funds and we have done it as our community project, all free of charge.”
He said that they had about eight council members working on the project and the only blip was the weather on Monday. “An hour after we finished painting it started raining but hopefully all was ok.”
Mr Burton said that the elderly normally use the facility during the day but they had been very helpful and had organised activities outdoors so they could get on with the project.
Stephen Ross-Gower, member of the Good Companions Club management committee, said: “It is brilliant. We have to be cautious with what we spend our money on and when their offer came through we thought it was absolutely brilliant. The finished product looks superb and we would like to thank everyone for their help.”
This week members of the council also did the floor plan for a refit of the kitchen at the League of Friends at the General Hospital.
