Camerons coming face to face with the future

Camerons celebrate innovation

Q: What do the world's first cordless kettle, the pocket mobile phone and the Bioform Bra have in common? How about the first hydrogen-powered motorcycle and the development of Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic Privateer spacecraft?
A: Innovation - and Richard Seymour.

Camerons celebrated a successful and innovative year in June 2008 by bringing Richard Seymour to Jersey to share his ideas with an invited audience of local politicians, business leaders and design students at the Radisson SAS Waterfront Hotel. The London-based design guru is a founding Director of Seymour Powell creators of 583 products for some of the world's top brands, with 38 awards to their name.

Richard challenged, provoked and inspired over 150 guests during his lunchtime and evening presentations, inviting them to throw their problems up in the air: "there'll be patterns that you don't normally see." He explained: "I believe that three-quarters of any design is finding out what the problem is. When you know that, the thing has a habit of designing itself."

With that in mind he proposed that Jersey transform itself into a nucleus of intellectual property: "Jersey could be famous for being the focus of the best ideas," he suggested. Richard's enduring passion for design shone through and he hinted at his latest collaboration, with multi-Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal: "We're both creative kids in a sweet shop," he explained.

Martin Holmes, Chief Executive of Camerons, welcomed Richard's thought-provoking approach: "His philosophy is an inspiration and we wanted to share that. Construction is an industry with plenty of scope for innovation and new ideas, which is something that really excites us at Camerons."
