The open day held at the Energy from Waste plant was a first for the main contractors, Camerons.
Although there have been guided tours of the plant in the late stages of the construction, this was the first time that the invitation had been extended to the general public.
Camerons Ltd Managing Director Marc Burton said that 39 people signed up for the open day, which took place the day before the building topped out. “We had a good cross section of people attending and among them were a number of residents from Havre des Pas so it was encouraging that the general reaction was a positive one. The group was really quite proactive in trying to understand what the plant does”, he said.
The Energy from Waste plant was shortlisted for the Jersey Electricity Sustainability Award at the Jersey Construction Awards. The facility will provide a reliable means of waste disposal for the island over the next 25 years and provide up to 7% of the island’s electricity needs.
The contract was for a new, modern plant that met the highest air quality standards in Europe and would replace the ageing Bellozanne incinerator which is now well past its useful operational life. The new facility will more than double the renewable power generated from waste on Island.
