First burn for the new incinerator

Waste was successfully burnt for the first time at the new £110 million energy-from-waste plant at La Colette yesterday morning.

Transport and Technical Services Minister Mike Jackson described the trial, using one of the two boilers, as a signigicant milestone for the plant.
The other boiler is due to be lit in a few days, as part of the commissioning process which started in October last year.

Mr Jackson said:  ‘Although there are still a few months of testing to go, the day is in sight when we will be confident that the Bellozane plant will never run again.’

Designed to operate for the next 25 years, the Island’s new incinerator should be able to cater for a potential growth in dumped rubbish and be capable of processing 105,000 tonnes per year.
Because the Island does not currently produce that level of waste, a stockpile of household refuse has been collected in the new plant’s bunker;  and continues to be fed in there so that the optimum amount of waste can be simulated during the trials.

Once the test period has been successfully completed, the plant will be slowed down to match the current Island waste production.
