Camerons, which was the first Jersey construction firm to make a formal commitment to the Eco-Active Business scheme, has been awarded level two accreditation. Mr Marc Burton, Managing Director of Camerons, commented: ‘We’re delighted to reach level two, especially in an industry that places such heavy demands on the environment. The Eco Active process is helping us to develop a more sustainable way of building that will reduce the ecological stress of the construction process in the island.’
Mr Burton explained what accreditation involved: ‘Level one, ‘registered status’, requires a positive commitment to minimise and improve the environmental impacts of your activities and to demonstrate that you are following all relevant environmental legislation. For level two, member status, its all about ‘getting your house into order’ and you must develop an action plan that is based on continuous improvement to operate your business in an environmentally responsible way.’
Mr Burton said that the company compiled a full action plan, which was checked and approved by the Eco Active Business team. As full members, Camerons will now submit an updated plan every 12 months, as well as evidence of achievements and plans for the coming year.
Mr Burton said that the scheme was not only good for Jersey’s environment, but also for business: ‘It brings benefits all round. Firstly, we’re becoming more efficient, driving down costs by achieving more from less. We’re also reducing our carbon footprint, which enhances our reputation and gives us a competitive advantage. It also encourages more creative solutions.’
He added: ‘Accreditation definitely has a “feel good factor”, which is good for morale.’
Camerons’ latest achievement was welcomed by, Louise Magris, Assistant Director for Environmental Policy, the scheme’s coordinator: ‘We’re particularly pleased that one of Jersey’s foremost construction companies has become a full Eco-Active Business member. It’s very good news for the island and sets an excellent example to the whole of the local business community.’
